The number of young people that indulge in some or the other kind of alcohol abuse in New Mexico is quite drastic. Estimates suggest that four in every five people of the age of eighteen years and below have already had their first taste of alcohol. This does not take much time to grow into a full scale addiction. Binging is also common among the youth; this is where a single person consumes as many as five straight drinks in a row. With such tendencies, it has become difficult to remove teenage alcohol abuse in New Mexico, mainly because the people in the state consider this addiction to be a kind of a fad.

The young age of the patients surely makes this a matter of concern. Because of their age, they cannot be provided strong forms of medication. They will need a complete detoxification program but it will not be possible to give them the kind of maintenance medications that are given to adults because of their juvenile constitutions that are still undergoing maturation.

Another problem that exists with alcohol with juvenile alcohol addiction in New Mexico is that of the strong emotional connection that the patients make with their addiction. Youngsters will always consume alcohol because of some emotional tendency, such as to come out of depression and failure, or as an answer to parental neglect, etc. It becomes important to provide them with emphatic counseling care in order to help them disassociate their mental conditions from their addiction.
